Heading South

Having taken Monday off I went for a walk in the Stoney Swamp area and stopped off along the trail at a pond. This pond is remarkable for the area in that it contains several heron nests. I thought it might be a good spot to check out migrating geese and I was not disapointed. About a minute after I got there, several hundred canada geese flew in from the east side of the pond and landed in the middle while honking as loud as they could. For the next ten minutes groups of stragglers came along and circled around and landed too. Quite an awesome sight (and sound) and not something you see very often.

Stoney Swamp by the light of the...

Swampmonster hydrolines

I went out for a ski in the greenbelt this evening. Well it ain't green these days and won't be for the next few months. It is amazing how much ambient light there is in the woods. Clouds are blocking out the moon and yet you can ski without a headlight (It helps to know where you are going!). I did a short loop and then went off trail for a bit where the snow was waist deep. The trails are not as good as Gatineau Park, the tracks are not level and the snow is soft and your poles go right through it. That said it is 5 minutes from home and free so no complaints from this guy.
