Marshall II
I had attempted Mt Marshall once before with Mark last September. We started too late from the Upper Works trailhead and got to within a mile or so of the top before deciding we did not have enough daylight so we headed back to the car. While frustrated by not getting to the top it was a great day anyhow exploring a new area and having lunch at flowed lands surrounded by kids from a nearby school on an outing.
So yesterday Ken and I set out from a different trailhead, Adirondack LOJ. We weren't sure of the weather but we had a loop figured out (to Indian Pass then up the Iroquois Pass and then back through Avalanche Pass) that would be a nice hike even if we decided not to go up the herd path to Mt Marshall. The trail to Indian Pass was described as a gentle ascent and seemed like a nice path with mostly dirt underfoot. We were making good time when Ken slipped twice on some loose rocks with the second time giving him a twisted/sprained ankle. Not a good thing to have happen on a hike but if there is a good place for this to happen it was on a nice trail, not too far from the car and near Rocky Falls.
Now Rocky falls can hardly be described as a waterfall (more like rapids) but it is a great place to sit on a rock and dangle one's feet in the cool running water. We called it a day and sat there for a while before walking back to the LOJ where I renewed my ADK membership and go another coffee cup with a Heart Lake photo on it! Hopefully this will be a temporary setback for Ken. As for Mt Marshall, I am beginning to feel jinxed and it may be hard to convince anyone else to go with me next time.
